Venice (also Venezia, Venesia or Venexia) is a northern Italian city, long regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe. It is spread over dozens of small islands and provides a vista of unique architecture and bridges, along with boat-based transit over its watery "roads". To date, apart from the above quote, its only mention in the Girl Genius comic proper has been in the backstory of Sanaa Tryggvassen, as related by her to her brother Othar. After getting herself elected a pirate queen, she then ran weapons to some student revolutionaries in the city who were attempting overthrow the "the Chancellor of Ca'foscari" who possessed a Semi-Invisible Hand. The entire city ended up being submerged ✣ , though it's not made clear if this fight was the direct cause.
In the potentially canonical short story with the short placeholder title "A Story With Franz", the island of Murano is mentioned, which is modern times in our world is considered part of Venice.
According to a real-life map[1] published by the Foglios, Venice is/was (just barely) within the boundaries of the Wulfenbach Empire, but just how canon said map remains is open to debate.
