Airman Thomas Crothers was a leader gunner on British airship HMA Esther de Groot and then a castaway marooned on Big Rat Island. He isn't officially named in the comic for several pages; so, for a time, he was known as "Ratticus", "Rat Fink", "Rat Guy", and other, similar wiki-coined names. These labels came from the fact that when we meet him he is dressed in a fairly elaborate rat disguise, which partially covers the ragged remains of his airshipman's outfit. He also smells like a rat; he explains he's sporting this ensemble to escape detection/specific notice by (some of) the island's current inhabitants, giant Horrible Rats who are the lethal creations of Francisia Monahan.

Agatha and Co. meet him when they covertly land on the island, and Agatha's new detecting-bot immediately detects him lurking nearby. His attempt to flee is cut short by a "clothesline" wrestling-type maneuver by Zeetha, who comments on the smell, also previously noted by Violetta.

He then gives his backstory: he was a crewman on the aforementioned airship which was attempting to reach The Americas. It encountered.. whatever it is that is keeping those continents cut off from Europa, and was destroyed. Crothers' escape boat eventually washed up on Big Rat Island, whereupon the rest of the boat's contingent immediately got wiped out by the rats. It turned out that the smaller rats on the island are less hostile, and he was able to befriend some of them and survive.

Judging by his reaction when the two of them meet, he's evidently heard scary(?) things about Hadrian Rakethorn.

He leads Our Heroes into the catacombs beneath the island, and while Agatha unravels the various mysteries of the place, Crother and Mr. Higgs hit it off, discussing various gastronomic matters from their shared airman's prospective.

Possibly Relevant Outside Information[]

"Ratman" Crothers may be a reference to Scatman Crothers, who —among perhaps more important contributions to American popular culture— appears in Deadly Eyes, a 1980s horror movie about "super rats".
