Girl Genius

The assignment of historic muses to the van Rijn muses now seems seriously in doubt.

Tinka is still clearly Terpsichore.

Moxana though is more likely not Calliope. Polyhymnia fits because the sacred and the mysterious are similar and Moxana is clearly a mime. Polyhymnia covers pantomime something of a similar nature.

The winged Muse then is either Calliope in keeping with the dominant position of the two. Or she is Clio. Because of the sword.

I would have thought Moxana is Urania, but that's before I noticed the orrery or its significance. I am not invested in this. But maybe it belongs on a /Mad page? ⚙Zarchne 00:54, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

Then there's this analysis: The Muses Identified, including the one with feathers. ⚙Zarchne 07:06, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

I may as well add my analysis to the discussion. I posted it as a comment in the Facebook group and it's found here: [[1]].

New Muse names: Prende, Artimo, Mawu, and Liza[]

I have to ask, Corgi, where did those new Muse names come from? Is there some new Word-of-God source you are aware of? A quick Google search turns up Mawu and Lisa (not Liza) as twin creator gods of Dahomey mythology (from West Africa), Prende is a love goddess from Albanian folklore, and Google fails me for Artimo. It seems to be quite a motley crew. --William Ansley 23:07, February 21, 2012 (UTC)

I didn't look those up - good sourcing! I wonder if that's their sources as well.
Corgi (talk) 01:57, May 5, 2013 (UTC)

Hey Corgi, It has been over a week. There needs to be references otherwise this is breaking either the canon or spoiler policy of the site. 20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 22:08, February 24, 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, never got back here at the time to see the comments.
Corgi (talk) 01:57, May 5, 2013 (UTC)

The newly added section claims the information is from a Wikipedia article, but I don't find Artimo listed in that article. We really need citations for the new names or they should be removed. Argadi 09:46, April 9, 2012 (UTC)

The additional names are not cited in the listed reference. I have boldly taken it upon myself to follow the rules & remove the speculative material as "unsupported fanon".--Bosda Di'Chi 13:12, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
The new muse names are from the second Girl Genius novel. I don't know why this information was never forthcoming from Corgi, but removing the new muse names now that the novel has been out a few days seems like rather bad timing. --William Ansley 19:02, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I don't DO 'unsupported fanon' in a wiki. Thanks for the doubt.
Corgi (talk) 01:57, May 5, 2013 (UTC)

[book 2 preview] is the reference. I didn't take the time to complete the previous edit which was a cut and paste job. Beside I thought everybody knew better than to doubt corgi. If god and corgi said different things I'd still believe corgi. She edits!!! 20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 21:43, April 9, 2012 (UTC)

I question the appropriateness of trying to match up the Van Rijn muses to the classical muses at all at this point. --William Ansley 22:02, April 9, 2012 (UTC)
I wholly agree. Several are very close analogies, but given that they couldn't even decide on how many Classical Muses there were (anywhere from 1 to 9, usually by odd numbers), I think this is far too rigid an interpretation.
Corgi (talk) 01:57, May 5, 2013 (UTC)
Which ones do you object to? If you match up the symbols I think we are pretty close. 20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 15:21, April 10, 2012 (UTC)

Criticism of a presumptive section[]

Muse Attribution Chart[]

I must say I still find this presumptive and overly rigid, especially in light of the [Muses sample art]. Mawu and Liza are not smiling and frowning as the chart suggests, Prende and Orotine both suggest Science of different sorts and oh yes, Otilia has no bow!

Please remove the our-world Muse analogies and put more question marks in the attributions of the Yarth Muses to whom we have not yet been introduced.

Corgi (talk) 03:27, May 16, 2014 (UTC)

Prende as the Muse of Time[]

I think Prende's identification with the classical Muse Urania is very doubtful at this point. While the gold sphere she is holding in the TPU mural doesn't look entirely unlike an armillary sphere, it also doesn't look entirely like one either (no internal circular tracks for "orbits", for instance). And in the prologue to Agatha H. and the Clockwork Princess, the sphere is described as collapsable, which would seems to be impractical for an armillary one; although, of course, nothing is impossible in the GG-verse.

I also think that it is too early to say that Prende is the The Muse of Time. While she is associated with a device that seems to have some degree of control over time, Van Rijn apparently did not build the Muse of Time and he definitely built Prende. Although, with time travel in the mix, anything goes, so perhaps he did, but didn't know it at the time. I hope will will have a definitive update to Prende's function soon. -- William Ansley (talk) 13:24, May 30, 2016 (UTC)

I added a question mark after the identification of Prende as the Muse of Time, since I think this is rather uncertain, but I won't claim it is definitely wrong at this point. -- William Ansley (talk) 14:05, December 22, 2017 (UTC)
Ah, oops.  My bad. I was sure someone in-comic called her that, when they found her.  Should have double-checked.  Sorry! Bkharvey (talk) 17:02, December 22, 2017 (UTC)

The Silverodeon[]

This may be completely crazy, but the Silverodeon is a calliope. Bkharvey (talk) 05:32, December 22, 2017 (UTC)
