Phil and Kaja Foglio (who together make up Studio Foglio) are bad at keeping websites related to their Girl Genius webcomic, aside from the comic website itself, up to date, or even functional. Kaja has repeatedly admitted this fact and the Foglios have a number of abandoned, dead, or otherwise unavailable websites to prove it. This is not always the Foglios' fault; in some cases technological progress, change of Internet fashion, or other factors have contributed to the demise of online sites they have used.
The Foglios also use social media sites that require an account (either free or paid) for access, which also prevents some people from viewing the material they post to these sites. (There are free social media sites that some people prefer not to sign up for, because they disapprove of certain business practices engaged in by by those sites. Facebook is perhaps the most prominent example.)
Both of these situations cause frustration for those trying to study the Girl Genius comics, prose novels, or related media. Various statements by the Foglios (see Word of God) regarding Girl Genius referred to in articles in this wiki can no longer be found for reference verification or further analysis.
The Foglios currently maintain and update Girl Genius entries on Twitter and Facebook. These accounts mostly just announce the posting of the latest comic on the main GG site. but sometimes they have GG-related news as well. The professors also have a separate Twitter account which details the ongoing personal exploits of Othar Tryggvassen. Gentleman Adventurer!
Although the main Girl Genius website isn't, strictly speaking, a social media site, it is the primary place to read the Girl Genius comic and, especially lately, one of the main places where Girl Genius and Studio Foglio news is posted.
Defunct Social Media Sites[]
There are a number of social media sites that the Foglios have used in the past that are no longer available for one reason or another. Some of the material that used to be posted to these sites can be retrieved from the Internet Archive's WayBack Machine, but there is no guarantee that any given item can be found there and it may take a significant amount of time and effort to find a given item or to determine that it is unavailable.
Studio News[]
There used to be a section of the Girl Genius website (https://www.girlgeniusonline.com) called Studio News, but that section was discontinued in favor of a new, external site. The material from the News section of the Girl Genius website remained available for a while, although all links to the News section from the rest of the site were removed, but the News section seems to be completely gone now.
Girl Genius Adventures blog (WordPress)[]
The Foglios set up a WordPress blogging site called Girl Genius Adventures (http://girlgeniusadventures.com/) to replace the Studio News section of their website. It was updated less and less frequently over time and is now no longer reachable.
LiveJournal[]
The Foglios used to post copies of their webcomic pages and commentary to LiveJournal for many years but shut down all of their LiveJournal sites some time ago. (Not only was their a LiveJournal site for the comic itself, but Phil and Kaja also each had their own personal LiveJournal site.)
Abandoned Social Media Sites[]
Deviant Art[]
For quite a while, the Foglios used a DeviantArt account to post a second copy of their Girl Genius comic pages (as well as other art) online, but the site hasn't been updated for over two years (by the end of 2020).
Tumbler[]
The Foglios also had a Tumblr account for posting Girl Genius related material, but they currently have forgotten the password.
Current Social Media Sites[]
Facebook[]
The Foglios post an announcement for every new page of the Girl Genius comic, along with a link, to their Facebook account, as well as other news and information. Since a Facebook account is required to view these postings and some people, for a variety of reasons, do not want to create a Facebook account, there are people who never see the Girl Genius material on Facebook.
Pillowfort[]
The Foglios have set up a Girl Genius account on a rather new social media site called Pillowfort, perhaps as a hedge in case people finally abandon Facebook en masse, as they have done with other social media sites (see Myspace).
Twitter[]
The Foglios are currently using Twitter for announcements related to Girl Genius, such as the appearance of new comic pages or Girl Genius or related crowdfunding campaigns, as well as personal postings.
- Girl Genius Twitter: @girlgenius
- Kaja on Twitter: @kajafoglio
- Phil on Twitter: @fogliophil
Othar Tryggvassen also has a Twitter account, despite being a fictional character.
Patreon[]
The Foglios have had a Patreon account for some time without doing much with it, but have recently started posting copies of pages of Girl Genius there, as an alternative to reading it on the main site. This started due to a long-running problem with the main Girl Genius website not being available in certain geographical regions, to give those fans affected a way to read the comic. Because of this, the Patreon posts with the pages from the comic were not originally restricted to Patreon contributors. The Foglios have continued to post copies of the Girl Genius pages to Patreon after the problem was fixed, but now are restricting them to be viewed by contributors only. The pages that posted without restrictions have remained that way.
