"Red Bear", a painting by Phil and Kaja Foglio

"Red Bear" painting

"Red Bear" is the name of a collaborative painting created by Phil and Kaja Foglio. It depicts a young woman riding a reddish mechanical bear through a darkening, snowy landscape. Behind her, looming like a cliff, are the head and shoulders of an enormous, prostrate, snow-covered clank. The trilobite emblem on the clank and its overall gaslamp fantasy aesthetic place this scene firmly in the world of Girl Genius; the bear rider is almost certainly Agatha Heterodyne.

This art work was originally created as the cover for the WindyCon 36 (2009) program book[1]. This image is also posted on the Girl Genius DeviantArt site with the following note:

Phil and I painted this for the WindyCon 36 program book. Phil drew the picture, based on one of my favorite themes from way back. (Those of you who have read my Cat on the Dovrefjell story will already know of my penchant for the image of a girl riding a bear...) I fiddled with it some and then painted it: Phil did the snow! Phil also provided some awesomeness to the final painting that I would never have thought of... but in the end, it's kind of hard to say who did what.

This painting is available in print as a double-page spread in Agatha Heterodyne and the Guardian Muse, in the bonus art section at the end of the book. It was also released as a high-resolution donation desktop wallpaper at some point in the past.
