Discussion for comic for 2011-05-09 (Monday) .

ByWhatRight

Here, kitty, kitty, kitty!

Just a gentle reminder that we have a no spoiler policy on this site. This page is a slight exception once the lj site is up. Other sites policies may vary. --20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 03:36, May 6, 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't expect the LJ site to be up early this time since the Friday comic hasn't even appeared on that site. Argadi 00:18, May 9, 2011 (UTC)
When is one allowed to edit regular wiki pages to reflect the new comic? Tistur 06:03, May 9, 2011 (UTC)
Midnight, after the regular page comes up. Exceptions for the dated forums and the chronology entry. Even those won't reflect a page until it is officially posted on one of the Foglios official sites. Which usually means the main page or the LJ entry. --Rej
So, uhhh, what type of person exactly reads a discussion page about a comic they haven't read yet? Slowness 07:17, May 9, 2011 (UTC)
That is up to the person involved. Not everyone accesses through the sneaky gate. Many people don't like being told how things come out before they see the comic. The policy could have been set differently but here the founders decided not to allow spoilers. I petitioned for an exception for the dated entries and Argadi agreed. So we allow discussion here once the page is officially posted either here or on LJ. When the webmistress is at a weekend event we will sometimes have the opportunity to see Mondays page in advance. But if you do that you are not supposed to talk about that here. If you think this does not work then petition to change it. However as long as the policy is unchanged and in place we ask people to follow it. --20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 19:43, May 9, 2011 (UTC)
Confused! -- Billy Catringer 17:29, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

The King interests me. Gotta wonder if the Wulfenbach line might have a bit of his blood in them. Oh, and 'Quo Jure?' run through Google Translate Latin->English came out as 'by what right he?', or better translated 'By what right?' 14:03, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

I'm a little confused. This doesn't fill in any blanks (yet) but introduces a few new characters, right? Would be sweet if it turned into a few days worth of story. -- 78.35.166.169 18:26, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

I find the fact that this story page isn't in sepia to be very interesting, since (as is well known) sepia has been used in GG for flashbacks and stories-within-the-story up to now. But this isn't completely so; the flashback scene depicting how Agatha got her locket was in (mostly) full color, although it was also a dream. Does this mean that the Foglios are playing with/still refining their color conventions or that this segment will go on for a while and they just decided it would be boring in sepia. Coloring conventions aside, I am really looking forward to seeing where this goes. William.ansley.animation.fan 19:39, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • Never mind the coloring conventions. Notice the fleur-de-lys. Where have we seen -that- before?

Well, I'm guessing you're referring to those on Otilia's "chassie," which are well displayed when she (it?) first climbs out of the pit . If the "good and noble king" of the current page is going to become the Storm King (and I readily admit that this looks iffy right now), then it makes sense that, as the Storm King, he would retain the use of fleur-de-lis as his emblem and that Van Rijn would have used that emblem when making a clank designed specifically for him. (Actually, on a closer look, the emblems on Otilia are not quite
fleur-de-lis. so this line of speculation may be even more bootless than is usual for me.) --William Ansley 17:54, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
Also, here (last panel). -- 78.35.176.206 20:26, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

I think we have a Roman à clef here. The ever smiling Heterodyne is like Faustus. Is the good heterodyne his son or the his son-in-law? Is his eldest daughter Euphrosynia Heterodyne or did he have many daughters? There is also the question of it this is a "true" story or if Klaus is making up out of whole cloth for his own purposes. Wanting to know keeps us reading the comics. So read on. --20px-1298786.png Rej¿¤¤? 20:05, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

it may be more complex than that, the variability of memory. Klaus may well believe his story is true, as others may believe alternate stories. see Absalom, Absalom! (one of William Faulkner's great novels) and/or Rashomon (one of Kurosawa's great films) as examples of the concept in literature. Memory studies have become an important part of modern Historiography, with much relevance to the ongoing Civil War sequicentennial.
I don't think I trust Klaus to be telling the truth here; not even the truth as he remembers it. I think that could explain why the frames are in a different colouring from most flashbacks. Klaus is conveying ideas that he wants to spread, to suit his own agenda. Thus, he may well be portraying his ancestor (well, the king does look like him) in a favourable light, and making all Heterodynes out to be evil. Note that within the Girl Genius world, mad science is everywhere but magic is usually fictional, so a "witch" is probably mythical. On the other hand, it would be typical of Klaus for there to be a grain of truth in all this too. If we knew what his agenda in telling it was, it might be easier to sift out that truth. Tarvek claims to be the descendant of Andronics Valois, the Storm King, on his mother's side. This implies no other surviving male heir. You're implying that the male line may actually have gone through the Wulfenbach family, making Klaus, and also Gil, possible claimants to the title "Storm King". Or that they have a stronger claim than the House of Sturmvoraus. This story could be interesting. AndyAB99 00:58, May 11, 2011 (UTC)
