You may be looking for What's New with Phil and Dixie: a pre-Girl-Genius comic by Phil Foglio, that was a regular feature of Dragon Magazine for quite some time. "What's New" occasionally featured a small dragon known as Growf.
Dragons play an important part in the Heterodyne Story, although, as alchemical creations[1] programmed to be territorial and greedy,[2] they are largely extinct by the time of the main narrative.[3] Their creation by individual sparks means each dragon is alchemically unique.[4]
Theo used a dragon clank "T'Otheron" as the villain in his story, The Heterodyne Boys and the Dragon from Mars.
Franz, the guardian of the Heterodyne treasure hoard, is generally thought to be the first dragon to be created.[5]
Then there is the "Pretty Boy" dragon, actual name Lord Floriel Flametongue, who seems to be the drake equivalent of Othar. From the novels we learn that back in the day of the Storm King the Heterodynes used dragon skull drums. General Zog recognized Pretty Boy as one of those dragons. He deemed them troublesome.[6]
A post-continuity Franz short story centers around an expedition to loot the lair of Hydrargyros, featuring the dragon hunter Blintzie von Wyrmhaut, and incidental references to historical dragons. It's revealed ✣ that, aside from Franz, most if not all other dragons are dead, having been killed by monster hunters.[7]
