Girl Genius
Volume summary: Volume 9 of Act 2

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each page of the comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other things of interest. Page numbers from the website are zero padded to three digits and in parentheses, for example: (005), (061), (113). Page numbers from print volumes are neither, for example: 5, 61, 113. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For historical reasons, volumes 1 (I) through 13 (XIII) are usually identified with Roman numerals on the Girl Genius chronology pages and elsewhere in the wiki. From volume 14 on, the story entered a new "act" and the volume numbers started over, in Arabic numbers, proceeded by a "2-". For example, overall volume 15 is given as volume 2-2 on chronology pages.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius.

For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

The airship with Agatha and company aboard reaches its destination, a fairly small island, and begins its final descent, as someone announces they are preparing to land. The island's shoreline seems to be entirely made up of steep rocky cliffs and the top is flat and heavily forested, with a small lake (feeding a waterfall down to the ocean) and a few structures appearing among the trees. Some of the structures seem ruinous, but any ruins of the ancient temple complex they are looking for should be so old that they would have disappeared entirely by the present time. And, anyway, the ruins aren't on any of the maps!
(Shouted) "Hey everybody, we're preparing to land!"

Agatha observes that the ruins don't look recent and Rakethorn surmises that survey records may have been falsified with Neena agreeing. Bang wonders if the ruins could actually be recently built but look old due to time trickery. Krosp, hearing this, runs to the airship's bridge in a panic and yells at the officers and crew not to land.
Agatha: "Huh…even so—those ruins sure don't look like they were built yesterday."

Captain (HMA Crisp)[6], Krosp, Soldier, Lieutenant[7], Communications Officer, Chief Officer
The Captain dismisses Krosp's warning (and Krosp himself) contemptuously, even though Krosp explains that there is a device that can stop time on the island, which gives those that possess it an insurmountable advantage unless the crew of the Crisp take precautions. A lieutenant on the bridge is swayed by Krosp's warning, but is dismissed in turn. The airship's Chief Officer appears and the lieutenant turns to him for support. The Chief Officer is angry at being locked in his cabin and the fact that the ship is landing. But, before he can say or do anything to stop it, he is shot in the chest by the Captain.
Krosp: "Listen! The people we're looking for have a device that can stop time! We have to be careful! If we land normally, they can just stroll on board and kill everyone!"

The explosion was real. The airship was deliberately scuttled, in spectacular fashion, as a distraction. With it still burning in the background, Agatha and company, along with the staff and crew of the HMA Crisp, descend to land or sea dangling from one-man emergency copters. Despite the fact that they are required to keep a very tight grip and hang from one arm, everyone seems to be taking things in stride. Everyone except for Krosp, that is! He is not at all happy, despite the fact that he gets to ride on the shoulders of one of his bears, who is hanging from two copters.

The members of the expedition who were heading towards the island have landed or are still landing, with Krosp and at least three of his bears about to touch down. Violetta and Rakethorn survey their surroundings, spotting some apparent ruins (along with a single lighted building), in the distance, which Rakethorn assumes is their target. As they discuss their next move, Agatha appears with an odd-looking, spidery clank she has just constructed.

Agatha's newly constructed spidery clank attacks Rakethorn, who fends it off quite easily, while Agatha tries to make it behave. Violetta notices Krosp is uneasy and asks why. It turns out that Krosp smells something rotten in the state of Denmark on the island. Violetta thinks it smells like wet rotting socks, but Krosp says he smells rats…lots and lots of rats with something really wrong with them.
Violetta: "Something up?"
Krosp: "What do you smell?"
Violetta: "Smell? Hmm. Salt…ocean…heather…bit of ozone…rain, uh—rotting wet socks?"

Thomas Crothers[14], Agatha, Violetta, <Mysterious Gigantic Entity
A frantic Crothers says he is a castaway and begs Agatha to leave him alone. Then, finding out she's not one of the bad guys, he begs her to take him off the island. When Agatha tells him she can't, he grows even more upset, saying they will all be killed. Violetta quizzes him about how long he has been there. Crothers isn't sure; it's been years! He was on an expedition to the Americas in a British airship. The attempt failed and the airship was wrecked. He and ten others survived, drifting for days until encountering the island. As they climbed the cliffs, one airman fell. While the others made it to the top, Crothers climbed down to help the fallen man, but found he was dead. Just as he was about to start climbing up a rope thrown to him by his remaining comrades, they all started screaming. He hid and remained in hiding, even long after the screaming stopped.
Crothers (shouted): "I—I'm just a humble castaway! I swear! I'm not here to disturb your nefarious plans!"
Agatha: "We just got here. We're not with them."
Crothers: "You're not? Then you've got to leave! Quickly! And take me with you!"
Agatha: "Ah. Leaving isn't really an option…"
Crothers: "Nooo! You've got to! I've been able to hide, but there's too many of you! They'll kill us all!"

<Thomas Crothers[14][17], Huge Creatures (Horrible Rats), Agatha
Crothers continues his story: After hiding nearly two days, he decided he would rather risk what's at the top of the cliffs than die of thirst and hunger. He was still cautious enough to climb up without using the rope and discovered it was booby trapped. In the darkness, which smelled of blood and death, he spied some lights among the distant ruins, which were guarded by huge shrieking creatures. With no food, water, companions, or safe place to stay, he began to despair. As he pauses in his story, Agatha congratulates Crothers on his survival, but he admits he had help.
Crothers: "There were lights in the distance, amid the ruins—shouting—and strange noises. Spark stuff. —And it was guarded. Huge creatures roamed the darkness outside. They shrieked and fought each other for scraps of what looked like—well—well. I knew not to go there."

The Polar Lords have brought Winter with them, to their troops' advantage, and that while she uses The Other's tools, the Queen of the Dawn is but an impersonator. Eotain's faith was shaken by the Queen leading the Geisters to utter defeat in Paris, even shooting the last Geister standing . Eotain convinced a small group of Geisters to rebel, shifting their loyalty to Agatha, their Holy Child.

The survivors helped her rebuild the damaged Gate (and, interestingly, herself), so an army of Geisters could be exiled to Europa to search for the stolen Holy Child. Their assault on Europa was disrupted by a group of priestesses who doubted the divinity of this particular incarnation of the Lady.

Snakkerjape, Yglyn, Guildhall Capstone Figure
Snakkerjape and Yglyn discuss the difference between minions and monsters. Snakkerjape breaks the clay Heterodyne sigil on the Guild Hall Capstone Figure's back, revealing a keyhole. He produces the Guildhall Key, inserts it in the keyhole, and proceeds to wind the statue like a clock.
Yglyn: "What have you done?!"

They leave the Cathedral together, Snakkerjape updating the Figure on events subsequent to the Fleshyards' destruction. The Figure is revealed to be a 'memory' of Castle Heterodyne.

Arriving at Key Park, the Figure explains that it is a fragment of Castle Heterodyne, created to isolate memories of an act that the Castle expected would be contrary to the Heterodyne Boys' orders. While the Castle manipulates something on the basin that holds the Key, Snakkerjape asks if the act was related to the destruction of the Guildhall. With a maniacal laugh, the Castle reveals that the Guildhall was never destroyed. The crowd that had been following the duo flee as the Guildhall erupts from the ground below.
Castle: "I serve the Heterodyne Family. The new Masters, goody-two shoes heroes that they were, did not always understand that. So, before I could be commanded not to, I acted."

Castle: "Muhahahahaha! Who said it was destroyed?!"

Agatha points out that Lady Steelgarter has four arms, and seems very interested in finding Skifander. Zeetha suggests she may be one of the Yajeena, Skifandrian high priestesses who, before Zeetha was born, traditionally had four arms. One of the Yajeenas, a high priestess of Eshkigax, engaged in a power struggle with Zeetha's grandmother. In the ensuing court intrigue, Zeetha's mother was exiled. While in exile, she met Zeetha's father, who later helped her win back the Skifandrian throne. Queen Zantabraxus' declaration of Ashtara as her patron goddess infuriated the Eshkigax loyalists.
Zeetha: "Back then, there was a high priestess who was really into Eshkigax. She's one of the goddesses that's sort of… well… Well… she's not very nice, okay?"

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.6 1.7 1.8 The title for this section is not from the Canon; that is, it is not from the Girl Genius website navigation menu. It was added for easier navigation within the chronology.
  2. It is unclear who this voice belongs to. Based on the informal phrasing, it is probably a member of Agatha's party, rather than a member of the airship's crew; but, aside from that, it's hard to say.
  3. Based on the first panel of the next page , this voice could belong to Hadrian Rakethorn.
  4. Based on the first panel of the next page , this voice probably belongs to Agatha Heterodyne.
  5. Based on the first panel of the next page , this voice almost certainly belongs to Neena.
  6. 6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 Professor Monahan reveals that the airship's captain is working for Ariadne Steelgarter a few pages later.
  7. 7.0 7.1 7.2 7.3 This character may not be a lieutenant, but he certainly seems to be some kind of low-ranking ship's officer.
  8. The full text isn't revealed until the next page.
  9. Only a few letters can be seen on this page , but the complete text of the sign could be seen on previous pages.
  10. The full word contracted as "'jacks" on this page most likely is "balloonjacks", used much earlier in the comic: Volume 13, page (030), panel 3. This was pointed out by sharp-eyed fan Scientician.
  11. On this page Francisia Monahan reveals that the airship captain, (first appearing on an earlier page , panel 6) who tried to land the airship on the island before he was stopped by Krosp and Bang, was working for Ariadne Steelgarter.
  12. Based on Agatha's and Violetta's conversation as they were descending, the people dropping into the sea are primarily members of the staff and crew of the HMA Crisp, while the ones landing on the island are primarily the passengers. But from the point of view of the speaker, Ariadne Steelgarter, any passengers are assumed to have dropped into the sea so the "they" includes any and all passengers.
  13. 13.0 13.1 13.2 13.3 13.4 13.5 13.6 13.7 The clank Agatha built earlier is making sound-effects-like noises, but they are in dialog balloons. Since this makes them a sort of unnatural hybrid (par for the course for Girl Genius!), they are being listed in the text section as sound effects, but capitalized like dialog.
  14. 14.0 14.1 14.2 14.3 Thomas Crothers wasn't named until the page for Monday, June 14, 2021. Before that he was known as "Ratticus" in the chronology and by that name and "Rat Fink", "Rat Guy", and other, similar, names elsewhere in the wiki.
  15. The page number on the web page for the comic was originally posted as 022, but was later corrected.
  16. The airman who fell and perished.
  17. 17.0 17.1 Thomas Crothers is also shown in the present time on this page, not just in flashback.
  18. There are over a dozen people in identical uniforms (dark green tops and caps, light green pants; they are shown from a great distance away, so details are hard to make out) moving about under the airship. They are performing duties such as operating the disembarking stairs and hauling baggage carts.
  19. There are a large number of people in identical uniforms (olive drab tops and caps, light green pants; they are shown from a great distance away, so details are hard to make out) standing in three ranks alongside the airship landing area. Not even an approximate number can be determined for this group, since the ranks extend out of panel and are partly hidden by an inset panel. It seems likely these people are soldiers or some kind of law enforcement officers sent by Colette to act as an honor guard for her guests and to keep an eye on them, make sure no unauthorized person gets off the ship, etc.
  20. The note above the comic page for Monday, July 12, 2021 is in error. It states that Monday's and Wednesday's pages are two halves of a double-page spread, but the spread is actually made up of Friday's and Monday's pages.
  21. In the final panel of the page for Wednesday, July 14, 2021 (vol.22, p. (030)), during an exchange between Seffie, Colette, and Trelawney, the latter two reveal that they have different ideas of what is suitable behavior for a Queen. (In the context of Trelawney's experience, "a Queen" can only be Albia.)
Seffie: "Well, my dear, it would not have surprised me!"
Colette:"Oh, cherie! No flirting in front of the guests!"
Trelawny: "Never fear, my Lady, in my experience, that is quite in character for a Queen!".
  22. 22.0 22.1 Although this is a non-canon section, it is considered to be an important navigation item, so it has been promoted to the same heading level as the canonical sections.
  23. 23.0 23.1 23.2 23.3 23.4 23.5 23.6 'Rude Mechanicals' is both a Shakespeare reference and a descriptor used by Kaja in Patreon comments for the Castle/Beast duo.
  24. It isn't until the comic page for Wednesday, August 25, 2021, that one of the Geisterdamen with Othar is definitely identified as Eotain.
  25. The storyline in the Girl Genius comic seems to have intersected with the storyline in Othar's Twitter.
  26. The Geisterdame who speaks to Othar in panel 2 of the page for Monday, August 23, 2021 is probably Eotain. From the next page (Wednesday, August 25, 2021), we know that one of them is, although they are all so similar in appearance it is hard to be sure of individual identities. But it seems logical that Eotain would be the one speaking to Othar the most often, since she has known him longer than the others, according to the events related in Othar's Twitter.
  27. 27.0 27.1 That fact that Othar speaks fluent Geisterspeak has been established in Othar's Twitter.
  28. 28.0 28.1 The name "Appassionata von Mollusk" is a parody of Appassionata Von Climax [sic] (you'll have to scroll down to see the capsule character description), from the well-known newspaper comic strip Li'l Abner. This was pointed out in the discussion forum for Friday, September 10, 2021 by knowledgeable fan Geoduck42.
  29. Drawing by Phil Foglio, inks by Shane White, to be colored later by Cheyenne Wright.
  30. 30.0 30.1 Appassionata von Mollusk's headpiece is similar to snail-shell hat work by Agatha Heterodyne as the Mechanicsburg Harvest Queen in the short story Ivo Sharktooth PJ. But then again, how many ways can you make a hat out of a giant snail shell?
  31. In the Patreon entry (available to patrons only), Kaja mentions that Phil is tired out from medical imaging and tests and will be having surgery on his shoulder in a couple of weeks.
  32. Page (037) of the Girl Genius comic was posted in black and white on Friday, July 30, 2021 and stayed that way until Friday, September 10, 2021.
  33. "Hyperorean" in panel 1 of the page for Monday, September 20, 2021 may be a typo for Hyperborean. If so, it most likely is a reference to the Hyborian Age, the fictional setting of the tales of Conan the Barbarian, originated by Robert E. Howard.
  34. "Zealandia" in panel 1 of the page for Monday, September 20, 2021 may possibly be a reference to Zealandia, a nearly completely submergered section of continental crust nearly as large as Australia. New Zealand and New Calendonia are the only significant land masses above sea level that are part of Zealandia. Perhaps an ancient, literate civilization existed there in the Girl Genius universe.
  35. "Ogham" in panel 1 of the page for Monday, September 20, 2021 may be a reference to Ogham, an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language.
  36. On the page for Friday, September 24, 2021 , in panel 1, Mogg is peering through the opening the bear punched through the wall two pages earlier (panel 6 on the page for Monday, September 20, 2021 ).
  37. Drawing by Phil Foglio, inks by Shane White, colored by Cheyenne Wright.
  38. 38.00 38.01 38.02 38.03 38.04 38.05 38.06 38.07 38.08 38.09 38.10 38.11 38.12 MGoM = The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters, an organization in "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story". The page numbering scheme at the bottoms of the pages of this short story actually look like this: "Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: Page 001". Since that would be a bit cumbersome to fit in the chronology table, an abbreviation is being used.
  39. Possibly M.G. is an abbreviation for Monsters' Guild, which itself would be a shortening of the name the Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters. We see in panel 3 that the room number of the current Monsters' Guild headquarters is 3R.
  40. 3R seems to be the room number of the current Monsters' Guild headquarters. It is up at least one flight of stairs, as we see in the previous panel, and is probably on the third floor, which (if the Europan conventions for floor numbering are the same as European ones, would be four flights up. 'R' may stand for "rear", as in the back of the building.
  41. The letters making up the words "Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters" are partly obscured by Snakkerjape's right leg.
  42. The words carved into the desk, "Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters", are written in large and small caps, but have been rendered as uppercase and lowercase here.
  43. Doctor Hembelbrogg's phrase, "It was bigger on the outside than the inside!" (emphasis altered from original) humorously inverts an idea that is fairly frequently used in fantasy and science fiction, that a building or object is "bigger on the inside then the outside". Probably the most famous example of this is the TARDIS in the British television series Doctor Who.
  44. 44.0 44.1 In the third novel (p. 485, hardcover edition), this is written as "The Flesh Yards".
  45. It is not clear if Paracleezious the Mad was a monster, a human (Sparky or not), or even, just perhaps, a Heterodyne; perhaps a younger scion not likely to become the Heterodyne. It would be interesting to know what he did that earned him the title "the Mad" in Mechanicsburg, where the competition, one would think, would be stiff. It does seem clear that the name "Paracleezious" is a joking reference to the real world Paracelsus.
  46. While not explicitly identified as such, the context makes it clear that the bulding shown under construction in panel 2 of the page for Friday, October 8, 2021 is the Great Hospital being rebuilt.
  47. In panel 1 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story", a character wearing a hat and a red trench coat is shown from a distance. While not certain, it seems likely that this is Ivo Sharktooth.
  48. In panel 4 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story", one of the Mechanicsburgers strongly resembles a young Carson von Mekkhan, including his characteristic flat cap and chain.
  49. In panel 4 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story", a woman is helping the possible Carson von Mekkhan come to the aid of the fleeing monsters. It is not out of the question that is Carson's wife and Van's mother.
  50. In panel 5 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story", a man is shown from behind in a flashback. His identity can't be determined from the drawing, but, from the context given on the page, it seems to be William Heterodyne.
  51. In panel 8 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story", the back of a large reptilian creature is shown. Based on the green coloring and sawtooth dorsal ridge, this could be Franz Scortchmaw.
  52. The poster shown in panel 1 of page 4 of "The Mechanicsburg Guild of Monsters: A Girl Genius short story" seems to be identical to the one recently posted as "filler art". It was actually posted twice, originally as a black and white line drawing on Friday, September 10, 2021, and then in color on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Please refer to these pages of the comic or their corresponding chronology entries for the full text of the poster.
  53. On the page for Wednesday, October 20, 2021 , Snakkerjape isn't actually shown buying the souvenir replica Monster Guildhall key, only apparently considering it. But it is revealed on the page for Wednesday, October 27, 2021 that he did actually buy one.
  54. Presumably, the Fleshyards, previously mentioned on pages MGoM-003 , MGoM-004 , and MGoM-008 .
  55. Araucaria araucana is more commonly known as the monkey-puzzle tree. Araucaria was also the pseudonym of a well-known cryptic crossword compiler from the UK.
  56. Initially identical to the previous page, so likely an error for 071.
  57. Likely a shoutout to Charles Stross
