Volume summary: Volume 8 of Act 2

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each page of the comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other things of interest. Page numbers from the website are zero padded to three digits and in parentheses, for example: (005), (061), (113). Page numbers from print volumes are neither, for example: 5, 61, 113. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For historical reasons, volumes 1 (I) through 13 (XIII) are usually identified with Roman numerals on the Girl Genius chronology pages and elsewhere in the wiki. From volume 14 on, the story entered a new "act" and the volume numbers started over, in Arabic numbers, proceeded by a "2-". For example, overall volume 15 is given as volume 2-2 on chronology pages.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius.

For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

Albia, A Great Many Onlookers, Whoever is in the Submarine
We see a vast chamber that seems to be a ceremonial submarine dock. Banners, which include the Union Jack, are hung above platforms on either side of a channel of water. Albia, who has enlarged herself to titanic size, occupies a higher platform at the back of the scene, fronted by a very broad stairway that extends down to the water. She is wearing armor and bears a trident and a shield emblazoned with a Union Jack. In the central channel, a submarine is approaching the rear dock where Albia is making a speech, welcoming back the submariners. While none of the occupants of the vessel are shown, presumably it contains Agatha and company, members of the Queen's Society Dome Kitchen Staff, Deepdwellers, and so on. On the platforms is a vast crowd of beings gathered to welcome the returning submarine and its occupants. Everyone, except Albia, is drawn to a very small scale, so it is hard to be sure who (or what) they all are, but on the lowest platforms are ranks of what could be soldiers, guards, sailors, and maintenance/support staff. On a higher platform to the left is a crowd of what may be Albia's Octopode subjects . On a similar raised platform to the right, a brass band is playing. On either side of Albia are people who may be courtiers, dignitaries, visitors, important guests, and other VIPs.
Albia: "Welcome back, brave warriors."

Albia, Zentai Ninjas, Sailors, Soldiers(?), Violetta, Martellus, Gil, Agatha, Zeetha, Tarvek, Maxim, Oggie, Agatha's Wasp eater, Krosp, Dimo, Trelawney, His Serenity, Gooblot
Albia recites the names of those who died and no one who hears her will ever foget them. Agatha and her companions all react to the ceremony in their own ways. His Serenity heads toward his audience with Albia, but is disappointed that "Lady Heterodyne" is not there (although she is). Gooblot reminds him that she is in her "land form" (that is, not longer in the mermaid costume ). His Serenity acknowlegdes this, but still seems disappointed. Agatha doesn't care for Zeetha's attempt to help.
Violetta: "What a moving ceremony."
Martellus: "Yes. I…still remember all of their names."
Gil: "My father once mentioned this. Albia spoke their names. We'll remember those names the rest of our lives."
Agatha: "That was amazing."
Zeetha: "That's the power of a Queen."
Tarvek: "Now, how would you duplicate that?"

Martellus, Xerxsephnia (Seffie), Sparafucile, Albia
Marellus and Sparafucile are standing on either side of Seffie, whose identity is completely concealed by a hooded cloak. As Martellus comments that they are no longer where the action is, Albia appears behind them. She is displeased to have Martellus show up without warning. He offers an explanation and apology, saying that they intended to present themselves to Albia when…presentable. Albia demands to know who is under the cloak and removes it. Seffie is revealed with candy in her hair. (It got there due to turbulence one the submarine during breakfast.) Seffie is embarrassed and lies, telling Albia it is a new Parisian fashion. Albia is delighted and invites to her party, insisting that she show off her new hairdo. Seffie doesn't dare refuse the invitation and is distressed and dismayed that she has to keep wearing food in her hair.
Albia: "Princess Xerxsephnia, we presume. Ah—is that—"
Seffie: "Couture de Sucreries, Your Majesty. I have only just come from Paris."
Albia: "Well. You look absolutely charming! You simply must wear it at tonight's celebratory revels."
Seffie: "Me?"
Albia: "Of course! You shall attend as our special guest! Our court is simply insatiable for the new fashions from Paris. They will adore you! For now, Lord Womble will show you to private quarters, where you may refresh yourselves and prepare."
Seffie and Martellus (together): "Thank you, Your Majesty."
Seffie (whispered): "Am I going to have to wear food in my hair all day?"
Martellus (whispered): "The waiters did warn us that the sub was about to launch—"

Zeetha, Princess[3], Other Party Guests, Tarvek, Higgs, Orotine[7]
Zeetha seems to be enjoying herself at Albia's party. She dances with one of the Princesses, then chats with Tarvek, saying she is disappointed that Higgs didn't come. (Higgs is there, posing as a waiter.) Tarvek and Zeetha dance (Zeetha leads, to Tarvek's discomfiture). Tarvek speculates that the members of Agatha's company are being deliberately kept apart; Rakethorn is dancing with Agatha and Trelawney with Gil. Just as Tarvek opines that no one is targeting him, he is greeted by the Muse Orotine.
Tarvek: "Heh. On the other hand, nobody's been coming after me, so I guess I'm not a target…besides, who could they possibly throw at me?"
Orotine: "Pardon me, but are you Tarvek Sturmvarous?"
Tarvek (last word shouted): "I—I…Orotine?"

Agatha is besieged by fans who quiz her on the details of the show, which are quite different from what really happened. Agatha manages to escape backstage and meets Abner. She sees Countess Marie helping another player change costume and banters with her, to Abner's displeasure.[26]
Master Payne: "'Ah—but what happens next?!' we hear you cry! Good Gentles, be not despondent! In due course, when you have danced, frolicked and supped, we shall, should it please Her Masjesty, return—that you may see how the Lady Heterodyne and her companions fought the ghost of the first Storm King—and sealed him into a magic sword! Don't forget to visit our famous Flea Circus in the East Courtyard."
Her Majesty (Albia), The Ghost of the First Storm King (Andronicus Valois), A Magic Sword (Archimedes' Lever), The Heterodynes, The Castle (Castle Heterodyne), Bosco[27] News: Kaja reports that their house didn't burn down, despite all the free-lance fireworks on Saturday. The Foglios themselves had virtual fireworks in Animal Crossing and WOW. Their garden is producing copious quantities of mustard greens.

Agatha, Countess Marie, Vex, Zeetha, Another Member of the Circus, <Albia[28]
Agatha discovers that Zeetha did come backstage, challenging Vex (her portrayer in the play) to a duel, to see if she could really fight. Fortunately, Vex is the Circus's fencing master, so she could. After the surprisingly nondestructive fracas, Vex and Zeetha bonded, drinking together while Zeetha taught Vex Zokka Pokka Zweet, a Skifandrian drinking song. According to Agatha, the song is incredibly obscene and has equally raunchy accompanying hand gestures, which Zeetha hadn't demonstrated yet because her hands were busy holding a bottle and stein. To head off any chance of Zeetha starting up, the Countess has Abner bring the pair more bottles. Marie asks if Agatha has found Skifander. Agatha replies they haven't yet, but she thinks they can. Then she asks the Countess for a favor.
Countess: "But Zeetha seems so much happier now. I remember how she was before you showed up—depressed, worried she might be going mad, wondering if her home even really existed—tell me, did you ever find it?"
Agatha: "Not yet, but we've met people who've heard of it. Albia for one."
Countess: "Why, that's wonderful! But even she doesn't know where it is?"
Agatha: "No. I think we may have a hope of finding it, though."
Zokka Pokka Zweet, Abner News: In today's report, we discover Kaja likes Marmite (on toast), Vegemite (presumably also on toast), and Tim Tams (presumably not on toast).

Trelawney, Tarvek, Gil, Seffie, Other party guests, Princess of the Realm?, Martellus, Orotine
Trelawney accuses Tarvek and Gil of moping, says Albia wouldn't like it, and orders Tarvek to dance with her. Then Seffie sees that Gil is free[29] and asks him to dance. Many couples are dancing, including Martellus and a Princess. As their dance ends, Martellus runs into Orotine, who addresses him by name. Martellus recognizes her as a Muse, explains he is the new Storm King, and asks which Muse she is. After identifying herself, Orotine denies that Martellus's claim to the title is legitimate. Martellus, angered, starts arguing, but then becomes quite ill.
Orotine: "Ah. Martellus von Blitzengaard, I believe."
Martellus: "That's right, and the newly crowned Storm King, in case you were unaware. Which one are you?"
Orotine: "Orotine, Your Highness—and, in the case of the Lightning Crown—you are quite mistaken. Although there is some dispute over which of my Late King's lines should be considered ascendant, you are in neither case the rightful heir."
Martellus: "I have the support of two Popes, and an army!"
Orotine: "You will require more than that."

News: Kaja reports that her son Victor (formerly known as Experiment #1) acquired the cookbook Asian Dumplings: Mastering Gyoza, Spring Rolls, Samosas and More by Andrea Nguyen. The Foglios have found that making dumplings at home is easy, though tedious, but worth it. Kaja is hanging on to small pleasant things.

Countess Marie, Abner, Agatha, Sparafucile[30], Martellus
While Countess Marie ponders her plan, Abner tells Agatha that she's urgently needed outside. Agatha emerges from backstage to hear Sparafucile and Martellus arguing. Martellus needs Agatha's touch immediately, his self-imposed biochemical dependency on her has been retriggered. Agatha reluctantly agrees to help by dancing with Martellus, removing her glove to ensure skin-to-skin contact. She tells him not to get used to it; they are going to fix the problem. He angrily agrees.
Sparafucile: "Sire, it would be simple for me to just subdue her."
Martellus: "Don't be a fool! Even if we weren't right under Albia's nose—I wouldn't let you. I want her to…see me as an…an ally."
Sparafucile: "Oh, yes, and you've charmed her so well already."
Martellus: "I need to work with her."
Sparafucile: "That might be difficult, since she hates you."
Agatha: "I'm not going to say you're wrong, but I'm hardly going to let him cause a scene at an otherwise lovely party."
Albia News: Experiment #2 has: a birthday this week (with cake!), Kaja listening to the Adventure Zone. Kaja likes something to listen to when adding word balloons because it is boring. (Sound effects are worse!) Kaja is dusting the house, a monumental task, because she thinks she has developed a dust allergy.

Agatha, Martellus, Agatha's Wasp eater, Other Pary Guests, Krosp, Rakethorn
While dancing with Agatha, Martellus say he wants to start working on the cure that night, but Agatha wants to stay at the party and dance. Martellus is surprised she's not in more of a hurry, but Agatha explains she has her weasel (in her ship-stern bustle) for backup.[31] Martellus reacts with amusement and becomes so agreeable that Agatha becomes suspicious. Krosp encourages her suspicion and he and Martellus start to argue. As the argument grows more heated, Rakethorn asks Agatha to dance and also asks if he can help with her secret plan.
Agatha: "Hmmm…now you're making me suspicious."
Krosp: "Oh, you should be. He's totally up to something. It's obvious."
Martellus: "I resent—"
Krosp: "I can smell it on him."
Martellus: "That is baseless slander!"
Krosp: "Nah. You're nose deep in Europan politics, claiming a contested throne—and you're not up to something? I disbelieve."
Martellus: "This is none of your business cat!"
Krosp: "Agatha is my business."
Martellus (shouted): "Rat eater!"
Krosp (shouted): "Monkey boy!"
Rakthorn: "Care for another dance?"
Agatha: "Oh…but this is so entertaining!"
The Queen (Albia), Europan, A Contested Throne (The Storm King conspiracy) News: Tuesday (the day before this page was published) was a grand day. It was Experiment #2's birthday (with cake!) and Bastille Day. Kaja likes La Marseillaise. The Foglios watched Knives Out.

Martellus, Krosp, Agatha, Rakethorn[32]
The argument between Krosp and Martellus becomes even more heated as Krosp points out that Agatha has ditched Martellus for Rakethorn, with whom she is dancing with evident enjoyment. Then Krosp bites Martellus and is flung into a bowl of cheese dip. Krosp realizes that Martellus genuinely likes Agatha, drinks the remaining cheese dip, and continues to needle Martellus, saying that he has no chance because Agatha hates him and that he should go back to conquering Europa; however, since he has tied himself to Agatha with science, Martellus will be dead by Christmas. As Krosp brags that he can think clearly, unlike Martellus, Martellus throws him a fish.
Martellus: "Agatha! Control your pet! Agatha?"
Krosp: "Ha! She's ditched you, chump!"
Martellus: "Confound it. I was trying to be pleasant."
Krosp: "Whoa. Hold on! You actually like her?…Wow! You do! I can tell!"
Martellus: "And why not? She is politically valuable—and when brought to heel, she will make an admirable queen."
Krosp: "…Aaaaad?"
Martellus: "Well, I'm not blind."

Agatha, Rakethorn, Other Party Guests, Krosp
Agatha asks Rakethorn why he believes she is planning something. He starts to say he figured it out for himself, but Krosp shows up and Rakethorn has to admit it was Krosp who filled him in. Agatha is angry with Krosp for revealing her secret at first, but his explanation (or more likely Rakethorn's apology) restores her good humor. She complements Rakethorn on being clever and he says he likes ladies who cause mischief, explaining that Albia encourages it. Agatha reminisces about her days at good old TPU.[33]
Agatha: "—But Doctor Rakethorn, what makes you so sure I'm planning something?"
Rakethorn: "My dear Lady Heterodyne, I have studied your methods. Your thought processes—"
Krosp: "Hey, Agatha! They're ready when you are!"
Rakethorn: "And your cat filled me in when I showed him to the kitchens."
The Queen (Albia), Transylvania Polygnostic, Professor Venruth News: Kaja posts about her recovery from a serious E. coli infection, as well as about re-watching the Back to the Future movies with her youngest child, who has never seen them. 1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 This title for this section is not from the Canon; that is, it is not from the Girl Genius website navigation menu. It was added for easier navigation within the chronology.
  2. 2.0 2.1 The name of this character is not revealed until the next page .
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 3.6 Presumably a Princess of England, a (theoretical, at least) successor to Queen Albia of England, and Albia's biological or adopted daughter.
  4. Only Seffie's voice is heard in the first panel, but she appears in the second.
  5. A magazine or newspaper.
  6. Violetta finally gets to wear a pretty dress to a great big fancy party.
  7. This is the first time that Orotine, one of the legendary Muses created by Van Rijn has appeared in the comic.
  8. 8.0 8.1 "Bellows" is a fan coined name, based on the fact that this character is always bellowing, at least during his few appearances in the comic.
  9. His title is revealed on the next page.
  10. In panel 3, Albia is shown to literally have stars in her eyes, but this could just be the reflection of her halo of stars.
  11. Tarvek was kidnapped by Mister Obsidian at the behest of Seffie so he could be brought to England. He was transported there by Seffie's chum, Captian Jeanne Hawkins, with a few delays.
  12. Pix's identity is revealed on the next page.
  13. We last saw Pix a long time ago. She was (and still is) a member of Master Payne's Circus of Adventure.
  14. The fortune teller's booth/tent that Agatha operated in while she replaced Madame Olga when she had just started traveling with the Circus had a sign outside that said:
    "WHAT IS YOUR FATE?
    MADAME OLGA
    MISTRESS OF THE SCIENCE OF
    TELLURICOMNI VISUALIZATION
    SEES ALL 👁 KNOWS ALL"
It looks like Phil forgot or couldn't squeeze in the final "I" in "TELLURICOMNI" on today's page.
  15. For comparison purposes, here is Master Payne making a very similar introductory speech back when Agatha had just gone into hiding, with help from the his Circus.
  16. 16.0 16.1 16.2 Portraying Zeetha
  17. 17.0 17.1 17.2 Probably portayed by Embi
  18. This is undoubtedly a reference to Saint George and the Dragon; the "England" in the Girl Genius universe apprently shares this legend with the England in the "real world", although probably not in quite the same form. It makes sense that Master Payne would mention it during s performance in Londinium, because Saint George is the Patron Saint of England.
  19. Presumably a bunch of actors from Master Payne's Circus of Adventure, costumed and made up as Jägermonsters.
  20. 20.0 20.1 They young women dancing with Krosp or waiting to do so could be Princesses of the Realm (although they don't have candy in their hair), courtiers, or party guests (presumably the daughters of other royal houses or other important people.

Krosp: "Naturally. I am very cute, and a snappy dresser."

  23. "Nah. They'll just portray me as a pompous martinet who only cares about food." - Comic page from Wednesday, July 1, 2020 , panel 1.
  24. Operating a marionette apparently meant to represent Franz Scortchmaw.
  25. Operating a marionette possibly meant to represent the Doom Bell Ringer.
  26. Countess: "Agatha! Are you here to exact your terrible revenge?"
Agatha: "I'll let you know after the second act!"
Abner: "You two are not nearly as funny as you think you are."
    - Comic page from Monday, July 6, 2020 , panel 10.
  27. Bosco could refer to Bosco Chocolate Syrup or Saint Bosco, the patron saint of illusionists and stage magicians. It is interesting to note that in one of Phil's earlier works involving Buck Godot, The Gallimaufry, Book 7 page 7, a character named Thad says “Thank Bosco they didn’t know when…”. This observation is due to the good memory of Foglio fan 9thGeneral.
  28. In this flashback, Albia has taken on the form of Queen Luheia.
  29. Seffie: "Gil! You're finally free!"
Gil: "Seffie. Yes, I…suppose I am."
    - Comic page from Friday, July 10, 2020 , panel 2.
  30. In panel 2 of this page it is obvious that, based on what is said, Sparafucile speaks first even though she's not shown until panel 3, in which she speaks second.
  31. Violetta: "You've replaced Martellus with a weasel?", volume 13, page 073 (web), panel 4.
  32. Only the arm and hand of the person Agatha is dancing with are shown, but it is most likely Rakethorn since he just asked her to dance on the previous page.
