Girl Genius
Volume summary: Volume 7 of Act 2

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each page of the comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other things of interest. Page numbers from the website are zero padded to three digits and in parentheses, for example: (005), (061), (113). Page numbers from print volumes are neither, for example: 5, 61, 113. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For historical reasons, volumes 1 (I) through 13 (XIII) are usually identified with Roman numerals on the Girl Genius chronology pages and elsewhere in the wiki. From volume 14 on, the story entered a new "act" and the volume numbers started over, in Arabic numbers, proceeded by a "2-". For example, overall volume 15 is given as volume 2-2 on chronology pages.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius.

For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

Tarvek, Gil/Klaus-in-Gil
Rather than running out after Agatha in a panic, Tarvek keeps his head and continues with the plan to remove the Klaus overlay from Gil's mind. He comes up with a plan B (plan A was Agatha's return) to call Klaus forth and activates the machine with a noisy electrical display. A quick test confirms that Klaus is now out of Gil's head.
Tarvek (shouted): "Oh! Agatha, there you are! Wulfenback, tell Agatha about that amazing plan of yours—to make Othar Tryggvassen head of the Empire's diplomatic corps!"
(!)Klaus-in-Gil: "His plan to do what?!"
(!)Tarvek: "Gotcha."

Gil, Tarvek
Gil wants to know what's going on, where Agatha is, and why he feels so peculiar. Tarvek answers the what and why first, explaining that a plan devised and carried out by Agatha and himself to remove Klaus's overlay from Gil's mind succeeded: Gil feels weird because the mental yoke he had been burdened with for two years is suddenly gone. Tarvek runs further tests that confirm Gil is Klaus free. Gil is delighted and extremely grateful, until Tarvek answers the where: Agatha is missing! Upon hearing this, Gil's gratitude is immediately replaced by anger.
Gil: "What did you do? I feel really weird."
Tarvek: "Well, of course. Your mind was under your father's control for what, two years?"
Gil: "'—Was?'"
Tarvek: "Yes! We did it! He's gone! Agatha and I built this machine, and you walked into it like a chump—and it worked! We did it!"
Gil: "Are…are you sure?"
Tarvek: "Yes! I've been analyzing your vocal harmonics. There was always a hint of secondary resonance—but now? It's gone!"

Tarvek, Gil
Gil and Tarvek argue, angrily at first. Gil blames Tarvek for not helping Agatha first. Tarvek explains that by freeing Gil from his father's control (before the perfect opportunity to do so passed by), he helped Agatha more than by immediately joining the many other people already looking for her. Gil grudgingly accepts this and says he still feels odd. Tarvek replies that Gil was in a Spark-induced fugue state (which normally lasts no more than a few hours) for two straight years, during which time he seriously neglected his health. By the end of the page, the argument has become (mostly) good-natured bantering.
Tarvek: "Listen. You are in charge of the entire Wulfenbach empire, and you are an over-trained, blindly determined, self-deluded fighting machine who will not quit. You are one of Agatha's greatest resources. Not as useful as I am, of course, but she needs all the allies she can get."
Gil: "Hrmf. Well, that does sound like exactly the type of paranoid, devious, manipulative sneak she'll need to help her to get through all this."

Sparafucile[4], Seffie[4], Agatha, Martellus
Agatha wakes up in a room containing Seffie[5], Sparafucile, and a Sparky-looking cylindrical[6] container large enough to hold a large man. Seffie opens the doors of the cylinder, producing a loud hissing noise and clouds of vapor that obscure what's inside. Seffie asks for Agatha's hand, which she places on something in the chamber. The fog clears, revealing Martellus. (By George, the cylinder did hold a large man!) He does not look at all well: his eyes are closed, his skin is greenish gray, and he has large tubes seemingly embedded in his shoulders and chest. He must have looked even worse earlier, however; since Sparafucile comments that he is already improving.
Agatha: "Princess Xerxsephnia?"
Seffie: "Ah—Lady Heterodyne! Don't worry, I'm not here to hurt you. Please. Give me your hand."

While not giving up his claim to the title of Storm King, Martellus proposes an alliance, saying that if Lucrezia takes over Europa[7], the title will be moot. He realizes that he can't fight Lucrezia alone and admits he needs Agatha, Tarvek, Gil, and the others to work with him; together they may be able to come up with a plan to defeat her. He specifically asks Krosp for help, to Krosp's amazement and disgust.
Martellus: "The Lightning Crown will do neither of us any good if Europa ultimately falls to Lucrezia. It's worse in the North, but her influence is everywhere—and it's growing as the Empire continues to slide into chaos. At this rate, there won't be an Empire to fight over."

Shortly after the Lucrezia-extraction device is activated, Lu-in-Agatha starts to scream loudly. The space around her is filled with a blue glow and coruscating filaments of light that appear to be electrical in nature. Above her, a greenish-yellow phantasm of Lucrezia, her face contorted with pain, fear, and anger, is being throttled by the right hand of a similar blue simulacrum of Agatha, wearing a fierce grimace of rage and exertion. Spectral Agatha's left hand is drawn back and clenched in a fist, ready to smack Lucrezia one in the kisser.

Gil plays back the original version of Agatha's message, in which she states that her mother is the Other[21], with Tarvek looking on. When it has finished, Gil angrily confronts Tarvek, blaming him for the death and distruction caused by Klaus's attempts to capture or kill Agatha. Tarvek denies that showing Gil's father the original message would have changed anything; he says the Baron was so sure Agatha was the Other that he would have assumed the real recording was a trick and disposed of Agatha anyway. Gil reluntantly accepts this, to Tarvek's intense relief. Any continuation of their argument is interrupted when another recording, this one of Ardsley Wooster, starts playing.
Gil: "So… that was the original message?"
Tarvek: "Ah. …Yes."
Gil: "Do you have any idea how much bloodshed might have been avoided if my father has seen this?"
Tarvek: "Very little, I expect."

He and the others are surprised they are not dead, with excellent reason. The sub's windows are broken and depth gauge shows them to be well below the "crush depth". They seems to be in some sort of atmosphere-containing cavern.

A great many creatures have drawn near the sub. Just about all of them display glowing markings on their bodies, fins, legs, spines, etc. Some resemble fish, eels, manta rays, and crabs, and some do not resemble any deep sea creature (or any sea creature at all) that we are familiar with in our world. The foremost examples of strangeness are the three beings leading the group: aquatic humanoids wearing clothing and bearing staves. These last three entities are walking, but almost all of the other creatures are somehow swimming or floating in the "air".

We see the head end of a Great Cetacean (presumably Ahnkokanth), looking angry and surrounded by a halo of much, much smaller sea creatures. Even whales look tiny next to this behemoth. The scene is very dark, appropriately enough, given the great depths at which the Great Cetaceans live. The primary sources of illumination are large, glowing, slightly-raised ovals on Ahnkokanth's skin. Ahnkokanth's eyes also glow and smaller, more faintly-glowing spots form streaks on the body and decorate the tendrils that descend below the jaws of this enormous being. Ahnkokanth's forelimbs are more like arms with fingered hands than fins. (This is faintly visible here but is shown somewhat more plainly on this page. )[27]

Krosp warns Martellus that his plan to be Storm King won't end well, says he should drop it, and that he should stick to animals, where he really knows his stuff. Martellus agrees, at least about his skill with animals, and holds up the kitchen's cat, regarding it with an ominous grin.

Zeetha and Higgs interrupt Agatha's meal for an important announcement. Higgs bows down to Agatha and reveals that he is a Jägergeneral and her spymaster. He hadn't revealed himself to her earlier because she still had Lucrezia in her head and the risk was too great. He admits he doesn't look much like a Jäger and states that although Axel Higgs wasn't his original name it is his "real name" now ('cause Zeetha likes it).
Zeetha: "Axel, if you don't think this is the proper time—"
Higgs: "No, you're right. I should have told her first. Lady Heterodyne. I am one of your Jägers—a general—and your spymaster. I apologize for keeping silent on the matter for so long, but the presence of Lady Lucrezia's anima in your mind was too great a security risk. Now that she is gone, I am yours to command."

But after that his luck ran out. While his fellow Jägers were getting fangs, horns, and claws, Higgs got nothing. Oh sure, he got the same strength, speed, and toughness, but none of the good looks! Even with Zeetha reassuring him that he looks great, Higgs admits he still wishes he had the teeth, at least. Oggie agrees that the teeth are great!

When Higgs took Zeetha to Mamma Gkika's, since Zeetha was injured defending Agatha, Mamma used everything she could to heal her, including the Jägerdraught. When Agatha asks if Zeetha is a Jäger now, Higgs say he doesn't know, since she never experienced the secret Heterodyne ritual.
Zeetha: "I think I died. Well—or almost, anyway. Zola stabbed me. In the chest. That's not something you walk away from. —But Mamma, she knows some of the Heterodynes' secrets. She generally only uses them to keep the Jägers patched up…"
Higgs: "But Zeetha was defending you. In Mamma's eyes, and mine—that made her worthy of the attempt. It wasn't just my…personal feelings. Mamma did everything she could, and, astonishingly, it worked—but, the thing is, everything she could meant using the Jägerdraught."
Agatha: "So—you're saying she's a Jäger?"
Higgs: "I don't know…Mamma only used the Draught. Only the Heterodynes knew how to do the full ritual."
Zeetha: "Just let me know if I start to dress like a rummage sale."

But suddenly Tarvek is distracted by Karl Thoptep, who tells him that not only Agatha but everyone in the world will die if they proceed with their current plan. While Gil and Trelawney can't see or hear Karl (only Tarvek and Higgs can), just hearing Tarvek's end of the conversation makes them begin to reconsider the weapons.
Karl: "I am analyzing…have analyzed…it is a difficult thread, but yes—within fifty cycles of your star—everyone on this world. Dead. Yes. —And really, this is/was a stupid plan. You should not need/have needed me to tell you this."

Dimo, Gooblot, Maxim, and His Serenity (and possibly others) are feasting on the catered banquet provided by the Queen's Society Dome Kitchen Staff. Dimo comments admiringly on how much the Deepdwellers are eating, especially His Serenity. Gooblot explains that lengthy banquets are part of Deepdweller culture, especially in the region His Serenity is from. But he goes on to say that Deepdwellers are natural gourmands, and when presented with too much unfamiliar food, they may eat so much of it that they will get ill or even die. Dimo at first seems to think Gooblot is joking, but Gooblot confirms that the Deepdwellers can die from overeating just like goldfish. When he hears that, Dimo springs into action, making a very bloated His Serenity stop eating and start exercising. Gooblot thanks him, but Dimo seems to be more concerned about keeping Maxim from being upset than in saving His Serenity's life.

A snag occurs when Agatha sees the costume's inspiration, the sculpture of her as a mermaid, for the first time and reacts quite negatively.
Rakethorn: "Good. Because they're ready for you now."
Agatha: "What, the fish people?"
Rakethorn: "Ah. No, they seem to be having some kind of dance party. Your Jägers appear to be impressive diplomats. They and the kitchen staff have bought us a lot of time. No, the others have been building you a…costume. They want to see if it fits properly."
Agatha: "Costume. The mermaid thing?"

Trelawney convinces Agatha to continue to her mermaid costume fitting. Agatha expresses doubts about the costume's decency and her ability to fool the Deepdwellers while wearing it, given that they have seen her (as Honoria Shammington) without it. Trelawney says it won't be a problem - all humans look alike to the Deepdwellers. (They have confused her and Rakethorn three times already.) When Agatha finally sees the costume, she is very impressed.[40] While Gil, Martellus, and Rakethorn brag about it, Tarvek makes one final suggestion.
Agatha: "Oh my! You have been busy!"
Gil: "Wonderful, isn't it? Sturmvoraus may have the ethics of a jackdaw, but he does know how to assemble an ensemble!"
Martellus: "I worked out the musculature of the tail! Authoritative like an orca, but sensual as a grunion!"
Rakethorn: "We used parts from the kitchen sub! I believe you could actually swim in it!"
Agatha: "Well, let's hope I don't have to. It really is impressive."
Tarvek: "Indeed! And now for the final touch—I know that the starfish aren't strictly accurate, so if you prefer—"

A bear holds up a large, heavy engine while Higgs works on it from below.[48] While Higgs makes repairs, he and the bear discuss the bear's desire to become a mechanic. Just after the repairs have been successfully completed, the captain of the submarine (who is obviously afraid of the bear) looks in to get a status report. The captain then reports to Tarvek that the sub is ready to go. Next, Tarvek turns to Higgs and says they should find Kjarl, who is standing right behind Higgs. Kjarl is quite dismayed to find that Tarvek can no longer see him; Higgs is disconcerted as well.
Higgs: "—And you're really interested in all this?"
Bear: "Yes. This bear does not want to be spear carrier for rest of life. "
Higgs: "Huh. I hear that. But—a machanic?"
Bear: "This bear thinks everything interesting uses machinery. This bear thinks, to be mechanic, will be interesting life."

It was added for easier navigation within the chronology.
  2. A lot of visual emphasis has been placed on the hammer on this page and the last. As the Castle points out, it belongs to Agatha—it can be seen in her tool belt on an earlier page. It turns out not to be a useful clue in the comic, but perhaps it is a meta-clue. It's reddish, coppery head may be meant to indicate that it is just a red herring or perhaps even that Agatha was kidnapped by red-headed person, as indeed turns out to be the case. This latter idea actually came up in fan speculation in the forum for this page.
  3. Mostly likely Sparafucile, based on what we learn on page 005 and page 006.
  4. 4.0 4.1 Voice only in panel 1, but the character speaking is clearly identified from the words spoken there and the images in later panels on this page.
  5. For anyone completely new to Girl Genius who happens to come across this entry, Seffie's full name is Xerxsephnia von Blitzengaard.
  6. The shape of the container holding Martellus is shown on the next page.
  7. Battling soldiers, clanks, and monsters are shown in the background of panel 4, as imagined by Martellus while he talks of the coming struggle with Lucrezia over Europa.
  8. The moniker "Zentai Ninjas" is a fan coinage (Bkharvey first came up with the name "Zentai Ninjas" in Forum:2019-08-05_(Monday)) that will be used in this wiki as a place holder until the group is identified by name in the comic (assuming that ever happens).
  9. Voice only in the first (inset) panel on this page. It seems clear that first dialog balloon in panel 1 is Trelawney's, even though it is detached.
  10. 10.0 10.1 Override transmission from forces loyal to Lucrezia. It is described as such on a later page than the one on which the transmission is first heard.
  11. Shown from behind only.
  12. 12.00 12.01 12.02 12.03 12.04 12.05 12.06 12.07 12.08 12.09 12.10 This being is identified as an "instance" of Lucrezia by Albia (channeling herself through Trelawney) on the page after she first appears, although her speech patterns immediately provide a strong hint of her identity. Several pages later in the story, the mechanical body occupied by Lucrezia's mind is identified as being the one Tarvek built for Anevka.
  13. Albia-in-Trelawney "speaks" (telepathically) first in this scene, making her the first to be listed, even though she isn't shown until panel 2.
  14. The visible members of the traitorous naval squad look as if they are either unconscious or dead. Whatever their condition, their costumes/uniforms are badly damaged. Overall, they certainly appear to be much the worse for wear.
  15. 15.0 15.1 Two voices are heard from "off screen" in the first panel of this page. It seems to be a reasonable assumption that the first belongs to Oggie and the second to Lucrezia-in-Anevka-Clank, based on on the last panel of a previous page, as well as from the first remark Martellus makes on this page.
  16. 16.0 16.1 Voice only in the first (inset) panel on this page. It seems clear that first dialog balloon in panel 1 is God-Queen Lucrezia-in-Agatha's, even though it is detached.
  17. 17.0 17.1 17.2 17.3 This is not the actual character, but a ghostly image that seems to represent her essentia.
  18. It is not completely certain at this point whether she is currently permanently free of Lucrezia's control, but it seems likely.
  19. Captain Snag is a ghostly submarine pirate.
  20. In the bluish light illuminiating the sub, his hair and beard look brown, but he appears again on a later page, with different lighting, where his hair and beard are obviously red.
  21. The version of the message that was shown to the public at large was doctored by Tarvek so that Agatha appears to be accusing Baron Klaus Wulfenbach of being the Other. This version can be seen in volume 6.
  22. There is a person being carried by Martellus. The person's head and upper body are blocked from view, but it seems very likely to be Seffie.
  23. This character's face is blocked from view, but you can see that he is wearing Martellus's outfit and has the right hair color, so it seems certain to be him.
  24. Maxim's voice is heard in the second panel, although he is not shown until the third.
  25. Their name is revealed by Hadrian Rakethorn on the next page.
  26. This being is addressed directly as "Your Serenity". This title revealed by another Deepdweller on the next page.
  27. This page is the left half of a double-page spread.
  28. This page is the right half of a double-page spread and includes an elegant and finely crafted link which displays both halves put together.
  29. The first speech balloon on this page is an unconnected one, but it seems clear thast it is Hadrian Rakethorn speaking, completing the remark he started on the end of the previous page .
  30. He is shown only from behind, but it seems very likely that Gilgamesh Wulfenbach is one of the people included in the last panel of the page for 2020-01-24 (Friday)
  31. The title for this volume was revealed as Sparks and Monsters in a printed message sent out with the rewards for the Queens and Pirates Kickstarter, but it was more widely confirmed when the Kickstarter for this volume launched in early August 2020. The latest Kickstarter campaign also revealed that the Foglios changed their minds about the cover art.
  32. The "shiny thing" was last mentioned in Act 2, Volume 2, on page (017), panel 2.
  33. The page for Friday, February 14, 2020 was originally posted in black and white. The page for Monday, February 17, 2020 was originally posted in black and white as well, but with no notification in the "Studio News" section. As of Friday, March 6, 2020, both pages were updated to color versions.
  34. The letters "LI" on the weight (along with the bottoms of two others, one of which is possibly an 'O', 'U', or 'C') might be part of a Roman numeral indicating its mass, or they might be part of a phrase such as "DO YOU EVEN LIFT?" The phrase "Dost thou even lyft?" used as a joke with the power-lifting clank Humongulus.
  35. The original page in the comic showing Zola stabbing Zeetha was posted on Friday, October 15, 2010 , in Act 1, Volume 10.
  36. Agatha first learns she has a spymaster from Jenka (in disguise) during a party in the Kingdom of the Argurons, in Act 2, Volume 3.
  37. Gil is shown handing the Magnificent Hat to Higgs in flashback in panel 2.
  38. In the originally posted (and still current) version of this page, Dimo is show with a flesh-and-blood left hand, not a mechanical one.
  39. The page for Friday, March 06, 2020, was originally posted as a black and white pencil sketch by Phil. As of Friday, March 6, 2020, the page has been updated to a color version.
  40. The giant "fishbowl on treads" that goes with Agatha's mermaid costume looks like the mobile bowl of the Goldfish, writ large. See the lower right corner of panel 1 on page 062 of act 1, volume 2.
  41. The tail of the dialog balloon in panel 1 indicates that Gil is speaking but this seems to be a mistake, since the dialog is shown as being completed by Tarvek in panel 3.
  42. Yeller Tayle is not shown in (large, central) panel 2 along with Gooblot and His Serenity, but the "Oooooh!" dialog balloon originating from these two characters in that panel has three tails, implying that Yeller Tayle is also speaking from out of panel. Therefore, Yeller is listed together with Gooblot and His Serenity.
  43. This sound effect is partly obscured by the edge of the page and Trelawney, but there appear to be six full repetitions shown, in whole or in part.
  44. His Serenity mistakes Hadrian Rakethorn for Trelawney Thorpe. Apparently, all "dryfins" look alike to Deepdwellers, as Trelawney stated earlier.
  45. 45.0 45.1 45.2 45.3 45.4 45.5 45.6 Ahnkokanth is speaking through His Serenity.
  46. This art interruption is atypical since there is no reason given for it on the page, such as delays, interruptions, or the illness of one of the Foglios or Cheyenne Wright.
  47. This was during the 2019–21 coronavirus pandemic.
  48. The page for Wednesday, April 8, 2020, is somewhat reminiscent of one from long ago, Friday, February 7, 2003 , where Punch is working on an engine.
  49. The page number is actually written as 017, but this is obviously an error where a zero was substituted for a one as the leftmost digit. The previous page was 116.
  50. This page is drawn entirely as a flashback (everything is colored in sepia tones), but Oggie is narrating the story from the present time (in the comic), so his name is not preceded by the flashback symbol (<).
  51. Oggie is shown before and after his Jägerization on the page for Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
  52. Oggie is apparently shown in the middle of undergoing Jägerization in panel 3 of the page for Friday, April 17, 2020.
  53. The tattoo shown in panel 3 of the page for Wednesday, April 22, 2020 is of Amabie, a yokai adopted in Japan as a mascot in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
