Girl Genius
Volume summary: Sparks and Monsters

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each page of the comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other things of interest. Page numbers from the website are zero padded to three digits and in parentheses, for example: (005), (061), (113). Page numbers from print volumes are neither, for example: 5, 61, 113. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For historical reasons, volumes 1 (I) through 13 (XIII) are usually identified with Roman numerals on the Girl Genius chronology pages and elsewhere in the wiki. From volume 14 on, the story entered a new "act" and the volume numbers started over, in Arabic numbers, proceeded by a "2-". For example, overall volume 15 is given as volume 2-2 on chronology pages.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology. For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius. For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

While comparing notes on Gil's 'problem', Agatha and Tarvek head to Tobber's lab to view the equations, but are thwarted by Smokes, who has sealed the lab on Wooster's instructions. They return to Agatha's lab, where Rakethorn has prepared a late meal.
Tarvek: "Agatha, how long has it been since you had anything to eat?"
[Agatha's stomach rumbles very loudly indeed!]
Agatha (embarrassed): "It may have been a while…"
Tarvek: "Yesss—come on, then, back to the lab. Now, it's quite late…but I'm sure I can find you something…"
Rakethorn: "—And so, knowing you would most likely be hungry—I have prepared a light scoundrel's tea."

Trelawney, Gil
Thorpe takes Gil to the Queen's Henge, the site that Albia created after her second breakthrough. This structure seems to be a type of megalithic monument consisting of three symmetrically overlapping circular henges.[24] The menhirs making up the henges are mostly rectangular slabs, but where the circles intersect are taller, less regular, tapering standing stones. Exactly what kind of stone was used (or if it is really stone at all) is uncertain, since the components of the henge glow with an eerie pale blue light. Seams in the sky can be seen above the intersections and boundaries of the henges. While the landscape along the horizon beyond the henge looks normal, the heavens appear fractured. Multiple images of the full moon can be seen in the areas of sky between the breaks, surrounded by stars that don't seem to match from one side of a seam to another.
Trelawney: "We're almost there, Herr Baron."
Gil: "What is this place? The moon is—"
Trelawney: "Don't mind that. It's just…an illusion of sorts. This is the Queen's Henge."
Gil: "I've never heard of it."
Trelawney: "I should think not. It's a very special, sacred place. You could fly over this land every day for a century and never see it at all, if you didn't know the right path."
Gil: "And…you're bringing me in?"
Trelawney: "I am one of its sacred guardians. The Queen trusts me—and I have chosen to trust you."

Agatha and company are on a balcony overlooking an enormous, very high stone chamber. On the roughly circular floor, some Grey Hoods work on an array of large, complex equipment near the center of the room, some of which is covered with a tarp. The devices are within a network of pipes or cables, laid on the floor, with upright cylinders at the vertices. The connectors and cylinders make up a large polygon surrounding the equipment, with many offshoots and cross connections, apparently including connections to the equipment. A crowd of other Grey Hoods looks on or mills about, talking amongst themselves. Below them, off to one side, is another balcony. Gargantuan carvings of a grotesquely varied assortment of monstrous beings, each in its own huge alcove, can be seen on the opposite side of the chamber, behind and above the equipment. (The entity in the rightmost alcove but one bears a striking resemblance to the extradimensional being looming over time-frozen Mechanicsburg.)

Using stealth and perfect timing, the team captures all the Grey Hoods below, ending with Sutton and the worrywart.

Tarvek, Higgs, Portable Castle, Wee Beastie, Grey Hoods, \Kjarl Thotep[37]
Tarvek, Higgs, the Portable Castle, and the Wee Beastie arrive in the summoning chamber, where Agatha and company have already been for a while. They overlook the scene from a different balcony than Agatha did.[38] Tarvek assesses the situation and tries to estimate their chances of stopping the ceremony; Higgs seems doubtful. Tarvek spots Agatha; then he and Higgs realize the Grey Hoods have spotted her too. Suddenly, someone points a gun at them.
Beast: "Look! There is something odd—that fellow there is dismantling a generator!"
Castle: "Oh, they'll do that at the drop of a hat."
Tarvek: "No, it is odd. They're in a hurry. They wouldn't—"
Higgs: "—Aaand, the others have tackled him. Good call."
Tarvek: "—And, on the other side of the room—"
Castle: "Ooh! Ooh! That's the Mistress! Well spotted!"
Tarvek: "I just looked in the best place for sabotage."
Higgs: "You ain't alone. They've seen her."
Tarvek: "I guess now we'll find out how many have weapons…"
[A gun is pointed at Tarvek and Higgs from out of panel.]
Kjarl: "Let's start with 'one'."

Old Grey Hood, Zeetha, Agatha(!), Oggie, Other Grey Hoods, Wooster
Agatha is engaged in heavy-duty rejiggering of the summoning chamber equipment while Zeetha and Oggie (and probably other members of her group), fend off the Grey Hoods trying to stop her. Finishing her work, Agatha throws a switch, triggering lightning, then a light show. She has activated the device! The Grey Hoods are upset because they didn't have time to carry out their ceremony first. Wooster is upset because he thought she was sabotaging the summoning engine, not fixing it. Agatha explains that she just couldn't pass up the chance to meet an extradimensional being in person.
Old Grey Hood (shouted): "What have you done?!"
Agatha: "I've activated the device!"
Old Grey Hood: "—But…the north generator has been disabled…"
Agatha: "Yes! The wiring was a mess! If you'd have turned it on, it would have melted the entire apparatus!"
Old Grey Hood: "But…but there was going to be a speech—and we didn't sing the song…"
Agatha: "Unnecessary decoration!"
Old Grey Hood: "I had a solo…"
Wooster: "Wait! You've turned it on?! The actual summoning engine? I thought you were trying to sabotage it!"
Agatha: "Sabotage? They're summoning something from another dimension! That's amazing! I've got to see how it works!"

Tarvek, Higgs, Agatha's Wasp eater, Castle Heterodyne#Portable Castle, Purple Being (Kjarl Thotep[39]), Wee Beastie, Grey Hoods
Tarvek and Higgs look down from above as Agatha activates the summoning engine. Tarvek is surprised that she didn't sabotage it; Higgs is not. They have been joined by a strange purple being, who seems to know what's going to happen in the future, although he has trouble with his tenses. Tarvek, Higgs, and the purple entity seem to be getting along well, even though the latter is carrying the gun Tarvek was recently threatened with in a hip holster.[37] They discuss what's going to happen next and the purple being mentions singing and a sacrifice.
Higgs: "So what happens next?"
Kjarl: "Oh. They will sing their little song."
Higgs: "'Little song?'"
Tarvek: "—And is something going to come through?"
Kjarl: "Oh yes. They have offered it the sacrifice. No— Uh— Will offer it. Yes. That's it."

Higgs, Tarvek, Purple Being (Kjarl Thotep), Wee Beastie, Castle Heterodyne#Portable Castle, Agatha's Wasp eater
At this point it is obvious something odd is going on with time near the purple entity. Events are happening out of order: Tarvek and Higgs notice Kjarl for the first time, then they see the summoning process at different, non-linear, non-contiguous stages, including the appearance of a big monster and a sacrifice. Kjarl explains that this effect is caused by his very existence, since Kjarl's dimension is in conflict with the one in which the main events of Girl Genius take place. Kjarl also mentions that Tarvek will have trouble staying sane and expresses a need for help that is being thwarted by Tarvek's disorientation and distraction.
Higgs: "What the heck are you?"
Tarvek (shouted): "Aah!"
Kjarl: "You are calm!"
Tarvek: "No I'm not! You're pointing a gun at us!"
Kjarl: "Oooh—I knew this would happen—wait, you will be calm. When you know that I am a friend. Yes. Will be."

Kjarl notices that Higgs is much less affected by the time distortion than Tarvek. Kjarl can "see" that Higgs is very, very old, which makes him more temporally stable. Kjarl somehow uses Higgs to anchor Tarvek in time. While Kjarl does this, he undergoes an odd change in appearance, radiating light that obscures his features. Kjarl mentions that Tarvek may undergo a small period of adjustment as Tarvek cries out in pain or surprise.
Tarvek (shouted): "Aah!"
Higgs: "Steady, Sir, we've done this before."
Kjarl: "Oh. You were…uh…are…somewhat unaffected. Interesting. Let me look at you—Oh. Goodness. What are you?"
Tarvek: "Why? What do you see?"
Kjarl: "Fourth dimensionally, he is a leviathan."
Higgs: "I'm a what, now?"
Tarvek: "Well, the fourth dimension is duration—so I'm guessing he can 'see' how old you are."
Kjarl: "Great heavens. Of course you can resist the ebb and flow."

Tarvek starts acting odd, ranting that he feels as if he is in a evanescent, soap-bubble world. Higgs asks Kjarl to explain. Kjarl replies that Tarvek, since he is now temporally anchored to Higgs, is suddenly experiencing Higgs' immense lifetime. Kjarl also suggests that Higgs must always feel the same. Higgs disagrees, staring that Tarvek's problem is from too much poetry and hopes Tarvek won't stay that way. Kjarl reassures him that Tarvek won't, since he is about to be driven insane by the summoning. Higgs demands that they stop it from happening, but Kjarl says it is much too late.
Higgs: "You okay?"
Tarvek: "Everything seems so…ephemeral. Like I'm the only real thing here. Oh, this fragile shell of earth and air…"
Higgs (speaking to Kjarl while pointing at Tarvek): "The hell?"
Kjarl: "He is experiencing what it feels like to be so massive all at once. You, most likely, have always felt this way."
Tarvek: "These brief and transitory works of man…"
Higgs: "Yeah, no, he's just read too much poetry. He ain't gonna stay like that, is he?"
Kjarl: "Oh, no, the insanity has cured him."
Higgs: "The what, now?"

Agatha triumphantly activates the de-summoning device. To Snacky's dismay, a rift opens in space, drawing in the monsters.
Tarvek: ""Is it working?"
Agatha: "Yes! I analyzed the vibrational frequencies—and plugged them into the equations from Mister Tobber's notes—and then inverted the whole thing! Now, I've reworked this whole array so that instead of calling these things here—it will send them back where they came from! I should be able to do the same thing in Mechanicsburg, assuming that—"

Snacky futilely tries to prevent his source of power, Red, from being drawn into the rift. Vapnoople is pleased by this turn of events. He provides his "new apprentice" with a practical demonstration of how to deal with enemies by picking up Snacky and summarily tossing him into the rift.
Vapnoople: "Now, for your first lesson! When your opponent is distracted, for instance, while he stands sniveling over the disruption of his own nefarious plans- that is the time to strike-"
Snacky: "What? No! Put me down!"
Vapnoople: "And assure your glorious triumph, once and for all!"
Snacky: "Nooooo!"

Wooster: "So did I get all that correctly? Doctor Dimitri Vapnoople, the only Spark in modern history to actually frighten Our Queen— is now loose, and off to some higher dimension where he intends to gain unimaginable power?"
Agatha: "That does seem to be the situation. It's too bad. I think there's a lot I could have learned from him."

  43. Vozzler seems to be Kjarl's (former?) occupation. Exactly what a vozzler is isn't fully explained. However, based on what Kjarl says when asked about the term ("We don't fight anything! Children love us!"), it seems to mean some kind of children's entertainer, such as a clown or story teller.
  44. It seems likely that the name of Seffie's "personal assistant" on this page is a reference to Sparafucile, a character in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto who is a a murderer for hire.
