Girl Genius
Volume summary: The Beast of the Rails

The chronology pages describe the comics to assist scholars in finding the page on which something occurred. For each page of the comic, the chronology pages identify the characters that appear, actions taken, significant quotes, and other things of interest. Page numbers from the website are zero padded to three digits and in parentheses, for example: (005), (061), (113). Page numbers from print volumes are neither, for example: 5, 61, 113. Section titles are from the canon unless otherwise noted.

For historical reasons, volumes 1 (I) through 13 (XIII) are usually identified with Roman numerals on the Girl Genius chronology pages and elsewhere in the wiki. From volume 14 on, the story entered a new "act" and the volume numbers started over, in Arabic numbers, proceeded by a "2-". For example, overall volume 15 is given as volume 2-2 on chronology pages.

For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

For more information on the double-page spreads in this volume, see double-page spreads in Girl Genius.

For more information on special pages in this volume, see the list of special pages, notes, and annotations.

Gil, Higgs, The Castle
Gil takes out and activates a device that seems to be able to amplify and "tune" the mysterious voices. After apparently focusing on the wrong voice, Gil "tunes in" Castle Heterodyne. The device allows two-way communication, and Gil attempts to speak to the Castle, but Higgs cuts him off before he can do so. This seems to be a good thing, because the Castle doesn't seem to be very fond of the Wulfenbach family or its minions or allies at the moment.

Higgs tells the Castle Agatha has escaped. The Castle approves. Gil (Higgs has told the Castle Gil is a technician) talks to it in French, to hide his identity. He finds out the Castle is hindered by the "time-freeze" field, but not not completely disabled. He tells it he is going to perform an extraction. The Castle demands to watch.
The Castle: "Ah… the 'technician' speaks, eh? Don't get any clever ideas, lackey— This disturbance hinders me greatly, but I still have my defenses."
Gil: "Of course, but… how is it that you are still—how you say—functional? The flow of time…she is stopped, no?"
The Castle: "Tch, Such small imagination…. So typical of the enemies of the Family… I am prepared for more contingencies than you would believe possible. …And do not assume that I suffer the spacial limitations of organic intelligences."

As Gil and Higgs attempt to leave Mechanicsburg, they run into a quick-growing thorn hedge that blocks their way. The Castle asks, as they search for an alternate exit, that they take the scenic route past a good view of the Red Cathedral, so they can tell the Castle what they see there. When asked, "Why?", the Castle explains that the Heterodynes discovered a way to stop time 300 years ago but abandoned it because there are things that even the Heterodynes would prefer not to know that notice when time is meddled with.
"You brief humans think of time—if you think of it at all—as a natural thing. Ubiquitous. Inevitable. You are blind little fish in the waters of a vast, deep cave. There are… others who see time differently. When it is meddled with, they notice."

In a scene apparently set in the future of the current story, TPU student Elmira (also known as Eillie) performs a forbidden experiment in Transdimensional Harmonics, to the dismay of her friend, Theodessa, and the outrage of Professor Bosewichte. This experiment seems to have something to do with the Heterodyne, but which Heterodyne?

One of them even made an attempt to be somewhat polite. Hmf. You are not a lost handbag. We will not just hand you over. He explains his philosophy of royal power and where Baron Klaus Wulfenbach went wrong. (The man Tweedle calls uncle on this page is identified as a bishop on page 97 of the online version of Act 2, Volume 1.)
Tweedle: "Uncle, if the Baron had deigned to declare himself Emperor— the Fifty Families would be his slaves. His mistake was that he refused to play the game. Or, perhaps, it is frightened by Tweedle, since he already tried to kill it. )

On LiveJournal, someone makes a convincing case that this is an idiomatic phrase that should be interpreted as "pickled hedgehog testicles". This seems to be more like the name of a dish and also the kind of joke Phil might make. Gil once made an aperitif with toothpaste and hedgehogs. "Bzzt! For a faux-academic electro-serial that promises adventure, romance and mad science, this story has contained remarkably little romance of late… I, of course, can appreciate the sleek metallic curves and well-oiled sensuousness of a beautifully designed locomotive as much as the next clank, but you—our delicate, demanding human readers—will generally demand more…and why not?"

"Well! They clearly do not grasp the simple concept that fashion exist to emphasize that which is already comely, and to disguise or downplay that which is aesthetically unpleasing. What it is not supposed to do is take the burning hot coal of unpleasant reality and jam it deep into the viewer's eye sockets where it can never be unseen!"

"Monsieur Le Tailoring Clank seems to have become so agitated that his mainspring seems to have—well—sprung!"
Monsieur Le Tailoring Clank, Jägers Many different kinds of hats are show on two paper doll pages. Girl Genius fans have spotted hats from Minnie Pearl, Tim the Enchanter, and a Blue Meanie, among others.

References

  1. Because of the inconsistency of the name of this station in Phil's artwork (CLANKHEAD) and in the dialog (Clankshead), I emailed the Foglios and got a response from Alice Bentley, relaying word from Kaja Foglio that "Clankshead" is correct—Phil made an error in the artwork.
  2. Brother Ulm's mention of trainsong is almost certainly a pun on Plainsong.
  3. Regarding "Boldly Go", Phil Foglio is a known Star Trek fan.
  4. The reader knows it's Dimo by the next page (010), but the identity of "someone tough" is not known to the monks, at least at this point in the story.
  5. VMVI looks like a number in Roman numerals at first glance, but makes no sense as one. It could be interpreted as 1001, but, if so, 5 is being added and subtracted in the same number (1000 + 5 + 1 – 5). It might be an acronym, presumably for a phrase in Latin. Here are some possibilities on LiveJournal.
  6. 6.00 6.01 6.02 6.03 6.04 6.05 6.06 6.07 6.08 6.09 6.10 6.11 6.12 6.13 This title for this section is not from the Canon; that is, it is not from the Girl Genius website navigation menu. It was added for easier navigation within this page.
  7. 7.0 7.1 The reader finds out this is definitely a reference to Agatha on page 15.
  8. It is not very clear. Here is an attempt to show possible alternative interpretations in a compact form: (6|G)7(2|X)1?07
  9. Since the Wikia search doesn't seem to work if Wikia formatting characters occur within the string, "Boy Genius" is written without them in this note so it can be searched successfully.
  10. The character Rerich von Billiguether came about as the fulfillment of the "Become a Character— and Die!" Volume 12 Kickstarter reward. The lucky recipient discusses the origin of the character's name on LiveJournal.
  11. Euphrosynia's first name is misspelled as Euphrosnia (missing the 'y') on this page. This has been fixed.
  12. 12.0 12.1 12.2 12.3 12.4 12.5 12.6 12.7 12.8 12.9 The Foglios have been inconsistent about the name of this character, alternately referring to her as Margarella and Margolotta.
  13. The full text of the note: "I can't believe this! We're still behind with the drawings. As always, this isn't Cheyenne's fault, we just got him the pencils. On the other hand, we finally got all the art for James Earnest's Muses deck done…More on that soon!"
  14. 14.0 14.1 It is unclear whether these people working in time-borer lab are technicians, engineers, scientists, Sparks, something else, or a combination of two or more of these, but at least two of them have the title of Doctor/Doktor (which in Germany, just as in the United States of America, can mean either a medical doctor or a PhD).
  15. This woman is addressed by the title Doktor on the next page, Monday, May 19.
  16. This text is small and hard to read. It is part of emblem on sleeve of Frau Doktor, a blonde woman at the bottom of the page, on a ribbon over a test tube.
  17. Because of the "time-freeze field," the Castle cannot see Gil directly, and he has been trying to disguise his identity by pretending to be French. The Castle seems to have caught on by this point.
  18. Vole is in the stasis field , seen as a blue glow behind Gil in panel 4.
  19. The distorted word balloons in the final panel have been unscrambled and assembled by fans as: "Heh. But I wasn't talking to you." (As well as some close variations.) If this is the Castle continuing the conversation it is having with Gil and Higgs earlier on the page, it puts a different slant on the conversation; that is, it is really talking to Higgs, not Gil, in the next to last panel. To illustrate:

The Castle: "Go. Find the Mistress. Tell her what is happening. She must return. Let nothing stop you."
Gil: "I'm… already working on that."
The Castle: "Do your best, young man. Heh. But I wasn't talking to you."

  20. See 2015-05-15 (Friday)
  21. Currently, there is a typo here: "Limerik" instead of "Limerick".
  22. This has been fixed. There are two typos in this sentence in the comic: Königsberg is missing the umlaut over the 'ö', "then" is used instead of "than".
  23. 23.00 23.01 23.02 23.03 23.04 23.05 23.06 23.07 23.08 23.09 23.10 23.11 23.12 23.13 23.14 23.15 23.16 23.17 23.18 23.19 23.20 23.21 23.22 Unfortunately, there is an inconsistency between how this phrase is spelled on this page and elsewhere throughout this volume. When it first appeared in the story, the first word was spelled "ite". In other appearances, the first word is sometimes spelled "ito".
  24. On the next page, Gil reveals to Higgs that the "feeds" are tubes pumping Vole full of nutrients and water, so he doesn't starve to death as he ages hundreds of years in minutes. This extreme, super-accelerated aging is an as-yet unexplained consequence of being removed from the time field.
  25. Doctor Scantrontb seems to be the same character we previously met as Frau Doktor.
  26. That is, how to stop Vole from dislodging the feeds that are keeping him alive without taking a beating from Vole.
  27. 27.0 27.1 27.2 27.3 27.4 27.5 SS-HC = Short story, "Homecoming King, a guest comic by Cheyenne Wright"
  28. A character named Ghengis Ht'rok-din is mentioned in Girl Genius: the Secret Blueprints for Volume One. Aside from the slightly different spelling of the name, the picture shown for him (alongside a picture of Bill and Barry Heterodyne, with the caption "Great-Great-&c Grandpa") looks nothing like Cheyenne's portrayal of the Ht'rok'din. This doesn't seem to qualify as a contradiction, however, because Ghengis Ht'rok-din is never definitely identified as the first of the Heterodyne line in the Secret Blueprints. In addition, the Secret Blueprints is known to be outdated, and the canonicity of any item in it is open to doubt. The canonicity of Cheyenne's story is also unknown at this time. Based on past history, any confusion that arises from these difference may never be resolved.
  29. The spelling is uncertain because the names were pronounced with a strong accent.
  30. The sound effect text behind the electrical discharge in panel 4 is very hard to make out, but it seems to be something like this.
  31. Although the Abbot is not named as Father Gerät until page 90 of the online version of Act 2, Volume 1, his name is used in the Chronology from his first appearance for the sake of brevity.
  32. This is a less common variant spelling of garrote.
  33. This theory is confirmed by events in the next volume.
  34. Although the monk is not named as Brother Gabriel until page 96 of the online version of Act 2, Volume 1, his name is used in the Chronology from his first appearance for the sake of brevity.
  35. This is the second time Krosp has been identified as a Moldovian Puff. Are we seeing the birth of a new running gag? This is also enough corroboration to assume Krosp really is a member of this breed, at least for the purposes of this wiki.
  36. As mentioned on the forum page, this is a Kickstarter pledge reward.
  37. This time the text of the Corbettite motto has a different error(?), which is that "Animose" is written as "Animost" in the last panel. Text on hats in Girl Genius seems to have a habit of morphing between spellings, see Magnificent Hat.
  38. This has been fixed. There is a typo here; the word is written "rom" in the comic.
  39. 39.0 39.1 The name of the saint ends with a 'K', rather than with a 'C' as it does in the dialog in the comic.
  40. This should be spelled "parley", but perhaps this is a Pirates of the Caribbean movie shout out.
  41. This has been fixed in the comic as well. There seems to be a typo in this dialog balloon in the online comic: The word "her" is missing before "father". This has been corrected for the quote in the Chronology entry.
  42. This has been fixed. There is a typo here. "Astounding" is written as "Astouning"
  43. Violetta: "I'm sorry she's dead… She was always nice to me… Well…she never tried to kill me… That is, I'm pretty sure those were all accidents… And, if they weren't…then she wasn't trying very hard…which was awfully sweet of her, right?"
  44. The cast list for this page is slightly conjectural since all the characters but one are shown from behind and all of them from a distance.

  50. Tarvek's last name is again given the alternative spelling, "Sturmvarous".
  51. The text is hard to read in this version, but can be seen more clearly in the Cinderella story on on page 9 and quite clearly on page 10.
  52. This phrase comes from the The Bible, Proverbs 6:6.
